প্রিয় শিক্ষার্থী, আজ ইংরেজি দ্বিতীয় পত্রের ৭ নম্বর প্রশ্ন অর্থাৎ Narration/Speech Change নিয়ে আলোচনা করব। এই প্রশ্নে একটি passage Indirect Speech দেওয়া থাকবে। প্রথমে Narration/Speech Change পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম অনুসরণ করে নিজেরা চেষ্টা করবে। তারপর উত্তর মিলিয়ে নেবে।
Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches.
1. উদাহরণ
The teacher said to the boy, “Do you think that honesty is the best policy?” The boy said, “Yes, sir, I think so.” “Then, learn to be honest from your boyhood. Never deviate from the honest way,” said the teacher. “I shall try my best to follow your advice. Thank you, sir,” said the boy. “May Allah grant you a long life,” said the teacher to the boy.
Answer: The teacher asked the boy if he (b) thought that honesty is the best policy. The boy politely replied in the affirmative that he (b) thought so. The teacher advised the boy to learn to be honest from his boyhood then and to never deviate from the honest way. The boy said that he would try his best to follow his (t) advice and politely thanked him (t). The teacher wished that Allah might grant him (b) a long life.
2. উদাহরণ
“You look a little bit like my mother,” he said. “Especially in the dark, by the fire.” “But you were only four, Jerry, when you came here. You have remembered how she looked all these years?” “My mother lives in Mannville,” he said.
Answer: Jerry told the writer/the authoress that she looked a little bit like his mother, especially in the dark by the fire. The writer/the authoress told Jerry that he had been only four when he had gone there. She also asked him if he had remembered how she had looked all those years. In reply, Jerry told that his mother lived in Mannville.
3. উদাহরণ
“Good morning,” said the tourist. “Do you have any room vacant?” “Yes sir, double or single?” “I want one single room,” said the tourist. The receptionist said, “We have a single room on the second floor. Will that serve your purpose?” “Fine, thank you.” “What’s the rent of the room?” “It is two thousand taka only. Now you have to advance half of the money.”
Answer: The tourist wished the receptionist good morning and asked him if they had any room vacant. The receptionist respectfully replied in the affirmative and asked him (t) if he wanted a double or single room. The tourist replied that he (t) wanted one single room. The receptionist said that they had a single room on the second floor and asked him (t) if that would serve his (t) purpose. The tourist became pleased and thanked him (r). Then, the tourist asked him (r) what the rent of the room was. The receptionist replied that it was two thousand taka only and added that he (t) had to advance half of the money then.
